Man rescued from Port Kembla fire

Picture: ORLANDO CHIODOA man is recovering in Wollongong Hospital after he was rescued from a burning building in Port Kembla last night.Police have set up a crime scene at the Kembla St boarding house after flames engulfed the single-level building just before midnight.Fire crews battled for nearly two hours to extinguish the blaze, which began in one of the boarding house rooms and spread through the roof.Eight people were evacuated from the boarding house, while NSW Fire Brigade personnel rescued a man who was suffering severe smoke inhalation.Fire units from Port Kembla, Wollongong, Unanderra, and Shellharbour extinguished the blaze about 1.40am.A NSW Police spokesperson said the building was extensively damaged in the blaze, and police will now prepare a report for the coroner.A crime scene has been established at the boarding house and forensic investigators will work at the site throughout the morning to establish the cause of the fire.A fire brigade sniffer dog will also be used in the investigation.Anyone with information about the fire is urged to contact Warilla Police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
